MYCELX Infused Products will not waterlog or sink

We do not sell the typical melt blown polypropylene materials that other companies use which are slow, ineffective, and over the long term, expensive.

After years of research MYCELX Technologies has developed and patented chemistry which will instantly render oils hydrophobic and viscoelastic. Oil will instantly bond to any substrate treated with our chemistry, thereby preventing sinking, emulsification, weathering, sheen and tarball formation. Our patented processing technology enables us to apply our chemistry to a variety of natural or synthetic materials. We are therefore able to make application specific substrate selections in order to respond to the specific requirements of a range of remediation scenarios. We at MYCELX Technologies have addressed the fact that what is required of a sorbent material in a sheen, where it is exposed to primarily water, is different than what is required of a sorbent when exposed primarily to oil. Additionally, requirements for a surface remediation technology vary by type of oil; as heavier oils have much higher surface tensions, and lower buoyancy, which reduces the effectiveness of materials that rely upon capillary action. We have addressed these issues and developed a versatile product line to meet your specific needs. Use of MYCELX products will maximize response effectiveness, while drastically reducing material usage, water drag-out, waste generation and ultimately, environmental damage.

We also manufacture MYCELX infused water filtration products that remove oil, gas, diesel, solvents (hydrocarbon & chlorinated), sheen, MTBE and PCBs from waste streams. These filter products have been designed for industrial process, groundwater, remediation, and Marine/Bilge applications.

 
Product Description
Terraguard Case of two, 10 ft. interconnectable lengths. Shore line protection system, instantly deployable underflow weir and permanent oil fence protector and oil absorber.
Sheen Devil Case of four, 10 ft. interconnectable lengths for stopping and absorbing oil and sheen. Will never waterlog or sink.
Versimat Case of four, 10 ft. interconnectable lengths. Each Versimat is 10ft. long x 5 ft. wide to stop and absorb light sheen to bulk amounts of oil. Boom type rope connections keep the Versimat tethered in place to reduce shifting and ensure consistent placement.
Versipad Case of 50 specialty oil absorbents. 14" x 21.5" Unfoldable to 18.2 sq. ft. Excellent for oil and sheen removal.
Superbuoyant RD Case of 5.12 ft. interconnectable lengths. For heavy/Group V oils and film. Will never waterlog or sink.
Viscochips 25 lbs. MYCELX infused wood chips for immobilizing water born oil spills to keep the oil from sinking, separating or emulsifying.
Smartpad Case of 50 super strong pads. 13.75" x 21" Will not bleed through. Use under dripping fittings/equipment to protect flooring.
MYCELX SilaKleen One cubic foot. For storm water run-off and bag filter applications. (Large grade approximately 1/8'' particles)


Why MYCELX Products Work Better

All MYCELX products are infused with our patented chemistry which renders all component materials highly absorbent to oil and repellent to water (U.S. Patent 5,437,793). 

Chemistry coupled with innovations made by identifying key physiochemical observables allows application specific substrate selections to be made, thus allowing product designs which maximize field effectiveness.

As an example, let's consider effectively removing and containing a film of oil on water. We have determined that oil is only removed where the substrate material makes contact with the surface. Effectiveness of oil pickup is directly a function of area exposed to the oil-water interface, and not a function of mass or volume. Extra mass only causes the material to drag-out more water. 

This is verified by the fact that the standard MBPP (melt blown polypropylene) boom or pad only picks up seven percent of its total oil sorption capacity, while dragging out up to ten times its weight in water.

Our products have been designed to maximize effective surface area and minimize weight. This maximizes performance while reducing water drag and waste disposal costs. On that basis, our products are fifty to one-hundred times less costly to use per unit of oil removed while maintaining a much higher degree of performance. What one actually pays for is effective contact area. (Please refer to drawings.)

Application Specific Substrates

All MYCELX immobilant products are infused with our patented chemistry which renders component materials highly absorbent to oil and repellent to water (US Patent 5,437,793). Chemistry coupled with innovations made by identifying key physiochemical observables allows application specific substrate selections to be made, thus allowing product designs which maximize field effectiveness.

Based on observations of actual oil spills, our products have been designed to optimize the following parameters:

  1. Weight
    We use the lightest weight materials to allow easy handling and keep disposal costs down.
  2. Buoyancy
    MYCELX uses materials that will stay buoyant for extended periods of time to maximize product life and to keep heavy oils from sinking.
  3. Effective Area
    Our products have been designed to maximize the area that is in contact with the contaminated surface thus maximizing containment and removal.
  4. Water Drag-out
    A minimum of water attaches to our products to keep disposal weight low and BTU values high (if incineration is required).
  5. Substrate Selection
    Due to our versatility we do not depend on one single material such as melt blown polypropylene (MBPP). We are able to make many materials perform oil absorbing tasks with our patented chemistry. Substrate selections are based on appropriate properties for the given application. We use materials ranging from wood shavings to polyethylene and other polymeric substrates to make the most effective products available.

Specific Applications

Substrates are selected according to the tasks they are to perform; for example, sheen requires a material that is very buoyant and stays at the oil/water interface. Heavy oils require materials that prevent sinking and weathering.

Each MYCELX product has been designed for specific applications by using a substrate that closely matches the properties required.
